Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. It is a natural human emotion that everyone experiences from time to time. For example, you might feel anxious before a job interview, a big presentation, or an important exam. However, if anxiety is excessive or persistent, it can become a problem.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States, affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year. Anxiety disorders can cause a wide range of symptoms, including:

  • Excessive worry or nervousness
  • Restlessness or feeling on edge
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle tension or aches
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Panic attacks
